Shaikh’s wife Shaheen (42) had filed for a divorce six months ago and the two have been living separately since last eight months.

Shaikh also attacked his two daughters, Asma, (16) and Mauseena, (13), when they tried to save their mother.

Santacruz police said that the accused was unemployed and was allegedly living off his wife’s money since last ten years.

Shaheen, who lives with her two daughters in a flat at Juhu Tara Road, takes private tuitions to support her family.

Shaheen told police that Shaikh entered her house around 12 pm while she was taking tuitions.

He was carrying a sickle in a bag and attacked her with a sickle on her right hand, neck and head.

“Shaheen’s daughters tried to intervene but he attacked them also,” said police inspector, Vijay Sawant, of Santacruz police station.

“While Asma suffered a deep cut on her left hand, Mauseena suffered injuries on her head and back. The three have been admitted to Holy Family Hospital in Bandra,” added Sawant.

But Shaikh frequently fought with her and took money from her, which led to the separation.

Shaheen told him to leave the house and Shaikh moved to Khar Danda. He tried to convince Shaheen to live together but she refused. Shaikh then decided to allegedly kill her and attacked at her with a sickle, added Sawant.

“We have arrested Shaikh for assault and attempt to murder. He is now under police custody and further investigation is going on,” said a police official.

The official added that a psychiatrist will now examine Shaikh.
