8 held in Malad rioting case

The police on Thursday night arrested eight persons in connection with the rioting case in which a Kandivli-based stockbroker and a Shiv Sena vibhag pramukh were beaten up by a group of 15-20 persons.

The accused, all of whom are residents of Bhadran Nagar in Malad, have been identified as Tejas Ruparalia, 24; Rohan Ruparalia, 22; Kaishal Mistry, 19; Krish alias Kanya Joshi, 20; Devendra alias Sonu Sharma, 20; Hitesh Shinde, 22; Amit alias Narendra Chaurasia, 21; and Irfan Musani, 21. They were produced before the Borivli court on Friday and were remanded in police custody.

The accused were initially booked for rioting and unlawful assembly. However, after Urvesh Trivedi, 21, one of the victims, claimed that his nose was fractured after the assault, the court applied the additional charge of assault against them.

The court also asked the Malad police to submit Trivedi’s medical report on Monday.

The incident happened on Wednesday night after Trivedi, a stockbroker, who had gone for a pre-garba event at the Gauraswadi ground in Kandivli, with his fiancée, confronted two of the accused for misbehaving with his partner. Trivedi was dragged from Kandivli to Bhadran Nagar in Malad (West), where the accused reside, and was beaten up.

The police have now decided to keep a close watch on garba events. “Eve-teasing during Navratri is rampant and the main task of police is to keep a watch on such incidents and ensure nothing leads to law and order problems,” said a police officer.

“Most eve-teasing incidents take place outside the grounds. We will be deploying officials in civil clothes in and outside the ground where garba events take place. Safety and security of women is of importance to us,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (north) Ramrao Pawar.
