The Powai police arrested nine people on Friday, including the office boy of a sari manufacturing company for stealing and forging three cheques from the company last month, reports HT Correspondent.

The nine accused who allegedly operated in a gang, were arrested from Chembur, RCF and Ghatkopar. “They have been booked for cheating and forgery,” said senior inspector Rajdoot Roopwate.

The police said, Rajendra Chaturvedi, head of the accounts department of Powai-based MSH Saree Private limited, lodged the complaint on November 29 that two blank cheques (of ICICI) and one cheque amounting to Rs 25,000 (of Axis bank) had been stolen.

During investigations, it was learnt that the Axis bank cheque had been deposited in the account of GP Enterprises, owned by one Vinod Tiwari. “After we arrested Tiwari, he led us to the other gang members. Digvijay Singh (22), the office boy of the company, had stolen the cheques from there,” said assistant inspector and investigating officer in the case S.M. Bhandge, adding that the accused had floated the fake company, GP Enterprises.

One of the accused, Rakesh Rathod (30) had forged the Axis bank cheque. “Rathod, who was earlier employed with the ICICI, is an expert in forging signatures. While the amount was Rs 25,000, he had made is Rs 2.5 lakh. He had even forged the signature of the company’s owner,” Bhandge said. “We are investigating whether the accused were involved in other such cases,” he added.
