Eighteen-year-old Mayur Sonawane was found hanging in his Kandivli home on Wednesday after he found out that he had failed to clear his HSC exams.

Mayur’s father, Vitthal, who works with the customs department, found the boy hanging. The suicide note said: “I am taking this step because I am upset and nobody should be blamed for my death.”

“The note does not clearly state that he was committing suicide because he failed in HSC. After inquiring [with his friends and family] we have found that failing [in the exams] is the motive. We will record the statements of his parents,” said Senior Police Inspector D N Jadhav.

Neighbours said Mayur did not show any signs of depression until Tuesday evening. “When we asked him about his result, Mayur said he had failed and would appear for the October exam and pass,” said a friend.

In another case, Chembur resident Aruna Ingawale (17) was found hanging from a dupatta in her home. She had failed in Economics.

Police said Aruna’s parents were out of town. Her sister, Karuna, was at college and her brother, Amol, was in the bathroom.

The third case was that of Kishore Kharade (20), a student of a Parel college, who was found hanging in his Trombay home on Tuesday night. Kharade had failed in four papers and was depressed, police said.

Dhanraj Valmiki (18) was lucky. He survived his suicide bid. Dhanraj allegedly jumped off the fifth floor of a building in Kandivli on Tuesday, after he failed in his HSC examination.

A student of Nirmala College, Dhanraj was scared his parents would be upset, police said. Passersby rushed him to KEM hospital. He is stable.

“We have registered an attempt to suicide case,” Senior Police Inspector S Kenjle said.
