The crime branch carried out the encounter on Mangesh Ankur Narkar, 34, a criminal who had escaped from custody a few days back. However, the Chembur police were unaware of the encounter and mistook the man to be an ordinary citizen.

In a press statement released on Sunday, the Chembur police stated that they found an unidentified injured man with two bullet injuries lying on the road. They rushed the man to Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared dead.

However, the police soon learnt that the man had been shot down in a joint operation carried out by unit 6 and property cell of the crime branch. Narkar was a criminal with at least 12 cases against him and who had escaped from custody a few days back.

A resident of Wadala, Narkar was serving a life sentence. He escaped while being shifted to Taloja prison from the Nagpur prison by throwing chilli powder in the eyes of the policemen escorting him on October 10. “There were at least 10 serious offences registered against him and the police were hunting for him,” said Police Inspector Sailesh Pasalvad,
an officer from the property cell.

Pasalvad, when asked about the same said the crime branch had passed on information about the encounter to the local police “in time.”

The crime branch said they were looking for Narkar since he escaped because they were able to arrest him after a long chase a few years ago. The property cell along with unit 4 and 5 were following Narkar closely.

The crime branch got information on Sunday that Narkar was going to the Central Avenue area to extort money from a businessman. The police laid a trap. When they asked Narkar to surrender, he opened fire and was injured in the encounter.
