'Accreditation to soon become compulsory'

The state government is going to propose a law to ensure all colleges affiliated to state universities be accredited.

Rajesh Tope, the state's technical and higher education minister said this at the opening of Rajasthani Sammelan's Durgadevi Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai on Sunday.

"Accreditation will be made compulsory for all affiliated colleges and the state is proposing a law to be drafted in this regard. As per this law, grants will only be allocated to these accredited institutions," said Tope.

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor Rajan Welukar also attended the inauguration function. Elaborating on the recent announcement to set up a medical college in the western suburbs, Chavan said the hospital will be set up in public-private partnership. The government has also proposed introducing two bills — Private University Bill and Maharashtra Technical University Bill.
