On Monday, Darshana Dhawale, 39, could not hold back her tears at a public meeting to protest the recent conviction of Dr Binayak Sen for sedition.

Dhawale’s Dalit activist husband, Sudheer Dhawale was also arrested on charges of sedition last week, soon after which the police authorities raided her house in Gondia district. “Thousands of people are being picked up and charged on wrong counts,” said Dhawale.
More than 200 protestors comprising activists, students and lawyers, attended the public meeting held at the Vanmali Hall in Dadar.
In December, Sen was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of sedition and conspiracy for allegedly being a naxal supporter.
Himanshu Kumar, Gandhian activist working with tribes in the Dantewada region of Chattisgarh, spoke about the “injustice” meted on the activists. The Committee for the Release of Binayak Sen has initiated an online petition http://www.petitiononline.com/sen2010/petition.html) to seek Sen’s release.
