Adarsh scam: Maharashtra governor seeks legal opinion

Governor Ch Vidysagar Rao has started the process of seeking opinion from legal experts over sanctioning permission sought by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to prosecute Ashok Chavan in Adarsh housing scam case.

The investigating agency had recently once again sought sanction from the Governor to prosecute the state Congress president for his alleged role in the case.

According to sources, the Governor has been taking legal opinion to come to a conclusion owing to the legal issues involved, as an earlier request by the agency to sanction the prosecution of the senior Congress leader was turned down by the then Governor, K Sankaranarayanan, in 2013.

This is second request made by the CBI seeking permission from the Governor in the past three years.

The Governor even discussed the issue with the advocate general Shrihari Aney in a meeting held on January 27.

Chavan, who had to resign from the post of chief minister after the scam surfaced, was among the 12 who were charge sheeted by the investigation agency in connection with the case.
