Senior BJP leader LK Advani on Monday rooted for a beleaguered Narendra Modi, calling him an able leader and hinting at a greater role for the Gujarat CM in running the party at the national level.

"Aise vyakti ke baare mein dushprachaar karna anyaaypoorn hai (It is unjust to criticise someone like him)," Advani said after he landed in Mumbai.

The Supreme Court on Monday refrained from passing any order on the alleged inaction of Modi during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Advani welcomed the move and claimed the order was a great relief to both the party and Modi. He hinted at a greater role for Modi in running the party when asked about the prime ministerial candidate and probable future leaders.

"There are a lot of my colleagues like Modi and others who are much younger than me and can do justice. They are very capable of undertaking the responsibility that the party bestows on them," said Advani.

Advani, however, seemed to be backing Modi.

He said, "Never in the history of this country has a leader been a victim of a sustained misinformation campaign. However, inspite of this almost everyone has said good things about governance in his state."
