For more than two hours on Tuesday, the man driving the Scorpio that ran over Mohammed Imran (2) at Govandi’s Bainganwadi locality was present with the infant. With him was the man who was in the passenger seat when the accident occurred. It was they who took the child to two hospitals before fleeing.According to the Shivaji Nagar police, the accused, both aged 25 to 28 years and as yet unidentified, had been spotted drinking with two locals — Ayub and Babul Machmach — at Kamla Raman Nagar Ground. They left in a silver Scorpio, passing through the congested, narrow lane where Mohammed stayed. As they made their way through the lane, they ran over Mohammed.

Within seconds, locals surrounded the SUV and told the men to get out of the vehicle. “As they got out, a bunch of maps and photocopies of two passports fell from the SUV,” said Mohammed’s uncle, Rizwan Ahmed (26).

Ahmed had not handed them over the passport copies to the police till Wednesday night. While Hindustan Times has these copies, it refrained from publishing them as it was not known if they belonged to the accused. Senior Police Inspector D.S. Jodgujari said: “We have not received the copies.”

In the meantime, some of the witnesses rushed to Mohammed’s house and informed his family of what had happened. “I ran to the nursing home, where the doctors told us Mohammed was critical and needed to be taken to Rajawadi Hospital,” said Ahmed.

“The duo and I put Mohammed in the Scorpio again and sped to Rajawadi, where he was pronounced dead. When I turned to confront them, they had disappeared,” said Ahmed.

Witnessed tried to jot down the car number, but could only manage to get part of it. Police are trying to trace the Scorpio through this incomplete number. Ayub and Machmach, who have cases of power and water theft against them, were detained. They did not, however, reveal the names of the accused.
