All work and no play as students look to make their vacations count

When her board exams ended three months ago, Kanupriya Aggrawal, 15, decided to spend her vacations teaching hearing-impaired students from a local not-for-profit.

Thrice a week, the student of DG Khetan International School, Malad, visits Sanskar Dham, an organisation working with differently-abled children.

“While many of my friends travelled abroad or signed up for a class, I wanted to spend some time with underprivileged students,” said Aggrawal. Ten students of DG Khetan International School have formed a ‘teens group’, which aims to do social work during vacations.

In a bid to spend their summer vacations doing something useful, many students are volunteering at city organisations. Not all of the volunteer work is entirely philanthropic though, as students are acutely aware that social work on the résumé bodes well for future admissions. “I will have an edge over other students and this will help me seek admissions to universities abroad,” said Devanshi Shah, a student of Dhirubai Ambani School, BKC. Shah has been visiting an orphanage in Matunga and spending time with abandoned children.
