The police have arrested the accused, Paramdeep Parminder Sandhu, 41, for drink driving and for assaulting policemen.

The incident took place around 1.20am when Sandhu was returning to his home on Juhu-Versova Link Road in his Ford Endeavour, accompanied by a female friend. As he turned at the Swami Samarth Chowk in Lokhandwala, he knocked down a 33-year-old hawker, Ramprakash Singh, who was on his bicycle. Singh was thrown off his cycle by the impact, but Sandhu did not stop to help, the police said.

“Sandhu was in an inebriated condition and drove away. A journalist, Abdul Kazi, was in his car near the spot. He gave Sandhu a chase and stopped him at Four Bungalows,” said Nandkumar Mhetar,
senior inspector, Versova police station.

The victim, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to Cooper hospital and discharged after treatment.

The court remanded Sandhu in police custody till Tuesday.
