Officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s hydraulic department said the fixture between two pipes near Diamond Garden had developed leaks due to the pressure created by water during supply hours.

“The line had developed leaks near the joint during supply hours on Monday afternoon. The joint couldn’t take the pressure and burst,” said Hydraulic Engineer Vinay Deshpande.

The line supplies water to Diamond Garden and nearby areas.

“The line has been repaired and water supply will not be affected on Tuesday,” added Deshpande.

According to civic data, there has been 33 major pipeline bursts in three months. More than 20 million litre of water has been being wasted in the bursts.

Currently, the water stocks in the six lakes are 3.3 lakh million litre, which on the same day last year was 5.2 lakh million litre.

“The pipelines have been rupturing frequently, leading to the wastage of several litres of water. If this continues, it will be difficult for us to supply water till July 15,”said a civic official, requesting anonymity.

“The replacement of the main pipelines is on and will take at least two years to complete it,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Anil Diggikar.
