The Borivli police on Thursday arrested Bipin Vyas, 57, a resident of Castle Apartment in Borivli (West), for allegedly molesting and cheating a homemaker.

Vyas, who lives with his wife and two children, was nabbed by the locals and handed over to the police after the victim, a Borivli resident, started to shout for help when the accused was reportedly molesting her.

According to the police, Vyas was running an astrology business, Raaj Jyotish, in Ratan Building on SV Road in Borivli.

The victim (name withheld) had first approached him on August 27 after seeing his advertisements on railway stations.

“She wanted to buy a new house but did not have enough money. She had approached Vyas and asked him how she could raise that kind of money,” said Bhagwan Chate, senior inspector, Borivli station. “He asked her buy a lottery ticket and give him Rs 11,000 to perform a puja to ensure she wins.”

However, the victim did not approach the authorities.

She again went to his office on November 15 and this time Vyas said he would refund the amount.

“He gave a cheque of Rs 11,000 which bounced when deposited. The victim returned and asked him to give her another cheque. Vyas agreed and during the course of the conversation started touching her inappropriately. She raised an alarm and people nearby intervened,” said Chate.

The police suspect Vyas could be involved in several similar offences, and are trying to trace the victims. Vyas has been remanded in police custody for three days.
