ATM robbery: Cops give security agency employees clean chit

The driver and security guard of the van carrying money and two others who deposited the cash at ATM centers were the suspects.

“In our investigations till now, we have come across nothing to hint at the involvement of the four employees working with the security agency. Initially, we were skeptical as the victims seemed to have been fallen into the trap laid by the accused easily,” said A Pathan, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Mahim Division.

Pathan added that all four suspects were grilled but the police finally reached a conclusion that all of them were very gullible.

“The greed of making some quick money made them go for the Rs 10 notes, which the accused had strewn near them. And, as a result, they left the door of the Omni van unguarded. We are now investigating the case from other angles,” said Pathan. The van was carrying about Rs 30 lakh, which had to be deposited at ATM centres.

The gun-toting security guard and driver were standing near the van when they were tricked by the accused, who made away with a bag containing Rs 19 lakh.

“Initially, the security guard Mushtaq Ahmed and driver Akhilesh Yadav told us they were standing on either side of the van as per procedure. But, later the duo admitted that they were both standing on the side of the van facing the road,” said a senior police officer, who did not wish to be named, as he is not authorised to speak on the issue.
