Aradhana Mishra gave birth to a girl on October 3 at 8 pm. Hospital authorities said there were only two boys born on that day and none of their blood groups matched that of Mishra's or her husband's.

They also said that Mishra's father-in-law claimed that he had received an anonymous phone call from within the hospital the next day saying that their baby had been swapped.

"Strict protocol has been followed and there has been no exchange. Though a child's blood group cannot be the only proof of his or her parentage, it has to match with either of the parents. In this case, while the father's blood group is O positive, both the mother's and the girl's blood group is B positive. Both the boys born in the hospital on that day have neither of the two blood groups," said Dr RV Rananavare, dean of Nair Hospital.

To remove all doubts, the couple insisted on getting a DNA test, but the municipal hospital does not have the facility.

With the hospital refusing any further tests, the mother was discharged on Friday and has returned home with the girl.
