Ban plastic material, thermocol: BMC

A notice of motion (technical term for suggestion) was passed in a meeting of the BMC’s general body recommending that the state government should amend the existing laws to ban all kinds of plastic packaging material and not just carry bags.

The BMC will now send the suggestions to the state government for further action.

Most corporators were in favour of a 100 per cent ban on plastic carry bags.

Though Mayor Shraddha Jadhav had announced that she would bring a resolution to enforce a complete ban on plastic carry bags immediately, she may have to go slow on the issue.

Additional Municipal Commissioner R.A. Rajeev said that a 100 per cent ban should to be done in a phased manner and will not happen in a short period. “Himachal Pradesh implemented 100 per cent plastic carry bags slowly and succeeded,” said Rajeev. “We will make an all-inclusive proposal in three weeks and table it before the general body after studying states like Himachal.”
