The BMC has appealed to citizens to plan their summer vacations according to these dates to ensure they are not left out of the process. The census will be the basis for issuing Unique Identification Numbers (UID) to citizens.

And since this is the first time the country is conducting a biometric process, those working or studying outside the city will have to be present in Mumbai during this 45-day period and ensure they are photographed and their finger prints taken.

Municipal Commissioner, Swadheen Kshatriya, appealed to the public to plan vacations accordingly. “We cannot force citizens, but the census this time will be a very important one,” Kshatriya said.

The BMC is conducting the census in Mumbai and its staff is now under training.

If you are not home for some reason, you will have to approach your local ward office in these 45 days.

Kshatriya said he will not make a statement that Mumbaiites should not to go on a vacation during this time, but added that he can only request to citizens to co-operate.

“We have informed the central government and the census body about this problem of summer vacations and are awaiting a reply,” he said. “But as of now, the dates remain the same and we will convey to the general public if there is any change.”

Under the biometric census exercise, the basis for the UID, every person aged above 15 will be photographed and his or her fingerprints taken to create a biometric national database that will form the base of a new national population register of this country of 1.2 billion people.

The UID is a government initiative to create and manage a centralised identification system for all adult citizens and residents of India.
