Bikers to get lessons on road discipline

Bikers seen zipping on the roads recklessly will finally be taught some road discipline. The Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) has decided to give driving lessons to two-wheeler drivers, especially from courier companies and eateries that are considered to be rash on the roads.

The Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) has decided to give driving lessons to two-wheeler drivers, especially from courier companies and eateries that are considered to be rash on the roads.

“We will give training to delivery boys of restaurants who are always in a hurry to meet their deadline. They are the ones who drive rashly and breach signals,” said WIAA executive chairman, Nitin Dossa.

This will be the first time professional training is given to two-wheeler riders, as there are no training schools in the city for them. WIAA will start its first session on Thursday at Churchgate, where 50 riders including employees of a Swedish firm are expected to come for training.

There will be presentations on road safety and discipline and the need to follow traffic rules. The riders will be given motorbikes to drive around Churchgate for training. “This initiative is much-required one. But there is no guarantee they would follow traffic rules and refrain from driving rashly after getting the training,” said an official from the Transport department.

According to statistics, 11,379 riders on two-wheelers were arrested in 2009 for drinking and driving as compared to the 3,987 four-wheeler drivers arrested for the same offence.

After their 2-day campaign in Mumbai, WIAA would follow suit in other cities like Pune and Solapur.
