BMC allows more FSI for PVT hospitals

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has agreed to give private hospitals an additional floor space index (FSI) of up to 4. The BMC got a notification from the state government regarding this on June 4.

The FSI determines how high a structure can be built. “We will now consider proposals from private hospitals to grant them FSI up to 4,” said Vishwas Joshi, chief engineer (Development Plan department), said on Friday.

Private hospitals in the island city will get an FSI of 5.33 and those in the suburbs will get an FSI of 5. The move is likely to attract more investment in healthcare.

The state had first this proposed this in 2008 but the BMC’s Improvements Committee objected saying private hospitals were not helping the poor. The government has now made it mandatory for hospitals availing of more FSI to reserve 10 per cent beds for poor patients.
