Your water bills are all set to get a little steeper, with the civic standing committee on Wednesday, approving the proposed tariff hike for drinking water on Wednesday.
The rate has been hiked from Rs 3.50 to Rs 4 for every 1,000 litres.
In a major relief to slum dwellers, however, the committee decided to slash the proposed 55% hike, from Rs 2.25 to Rs 3.50. Slum dwellers will now have to pay Rs 3 for every 1,000 litres they consume. The committee has also approved a move to raise the tax rates every year.
The new rates mean that a family of four that consumes around 750 litres a day and is paying Rs 79 as tax, will now have to pay Rs 90.
For slum dwellers, the new rates would mean that those families in slums which consume 450 litres a day and pay Rs 30, will now pay Rs 40.50.
The ruling Shiv Sena-BJP alliance said that the hike was necessary to raise money for water projects.
“Expenditure on water supply projects such as the Damanganga and Pinjal projects, need to be recovered. If the BMC is chalking out projects to meet the city’s increasing water needs in the coming years, it would need to meet costs,” said Rahul Shewale, civic standing committee chairman.
