BMC identifies 270 spots prone to flooding

The civic body’s list includes 66 chronic flooding spots such as Hindmata, road number 24 at Sion, Milan subway, Khar subway, Nair hospital gate at Mumbai Central, DN Nagar in Andheri, JVPD, JP Road, SV Road, LBS Marg and Dahisar subway

With the monsoon around the corner, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 270 spots in the city that are prone to waterlogging.

The civic body’s list includes 66 chronic flooding spots such as Hindmata, road number 24 at Sion, Milan subway, Khar subway, Nair hospital gate at Mumbai Central, DN Nagar in Andheri, JVPD, JP Road, SV Road, LBS Marg and Dahisar subway. The BMC has already installed 293 de-watering pumps across the 270 spots, said officials.

The city will witness 24 days of high tide this monsoon, when the sea levels are expected to rise above 4.5m. IA Kundan, additional municipal commissioner, said, “We have installed de-watering pumps across the city. The Britannia pumping station, which will start functioning from June 15, will reduce waterlogging at Hindmata. However, a high tide with heavy rain may pose a problem. In a recent meeting, we have briefed both private and public agencies on the measures to be undertaken at such times.”

According to the usual procedure, the civic body will send bulk messages to private agencies on how to carry out evacuation measures in case of a crisis. The agencies have also been instructed to give priority to women during rescue operations.

Notices have also been issued to 633 private buildings in the most dangerous category and 23 cessed structures. It has also identified 2,057 C2 structures, which require major repairs, and 585 private buildings in the C3 category, which require minor repairs.
