After ministers, now the civic body itself has set another deadline to fill road potholes: Saturday, 6 pm. Sunday is the last day of the Ganeshotsav.

On August 30, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan asked the civic body and other state government agencies to repair all roads in Mumbai in two days, before September 1. It was third such deadline set by the government in the past few weeks.

On August 5, guardian minister for suburbs Naseem Khan had asked the civic body to fill all potholes in 48 hours. It was followed by an August 24 deadline by guardian minister for island city Jayant Patil on August 16. But the BMC and other agencies failed to comply and are still struggling to clear city roads.

“We have instructed all 24 ward offices to fill potholes in their respective wards before 6pm on Saturday, as after that no work would allow for security reason,” said Satish Badve, chief engineer (roads).

According to the last update, 148 pothole locations still remain in the city. Total 10,390 locations were detected, of which 10,242 were filled as on September 7. “Now we will not count pothole locations as we have to fill all of them at any cost,” added Badve.

Prakash Kanavje, vice president of the Nikadwari Lane Sarvajanik Ganeshostav Mandal, known as Girgaoncha Raja, said, “We are fully ready with empty gunny bags and iron plates to fill pothole to keep idols safe during immersion processions.”
