“We are thankful to the civic authorities that they took our complaint seriously,” said Rekha’s husband, Kishorilal, who works a conservancy worker with the ward office in Dadar.

A resident doctor and a senior nurse have been suspended as the preliminary inquiry found them guilty.

“We are still conducting a detailed investigation as to what were the circumstances under which they were turned away. Until the inquiry is completed they have asked them not to report to work,” said Dr G.T. Ambe, Executive health officer. The role of other staff is also being questioned.

On Monday, Kishorilal took his eight-month pregnant Rekha to the maternity home after she experienced labour pains.

The doctors examined Rekha and told Kishorilal to get her admitted to Sion Hospital because it was a premature delivery. While Gohil went to fetch a taxi, Rekha delivered a girl on the pavement.
