BMC to add 100 MLD to Mumbai’s water supply soon

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) much-delayed plan to add a supply of 100 million litres of water a day (MLD) will soon be completed.

The civic body also plans to repair and replace around 116km of pipelines in the city.

Its two main water treatment plants, which wasted 50 MLD of water each, will now provide additional water. The civic body also plans to repair and replace around 116km of pipelines in the city.

Around 100 MLD water is wasted during the purification process at the two water treatment plants – the Pise Panjrapur water treatment plant and the Bhandup water treatment plant.

The civic body was to restructure or make changes in the treatment plants to recycle wasted potable water and supply it to citizens.

The Bhandup treatment plant has already been restructured and is adding 50 MLD of water to the city’s supply, whereas the Pise Panjrapur plant, which also wastes 50 MLD, will recycle water after it has been restructured, said civic officials. The plan to recycle this waste water was initiated in 2012.

According to civic sources, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had slapped a notice in late 2014 to drain out water from the Bhandup treatment plant into Powai lake.

One of the civic officials, on request of anonymity, said, “The work on the Pise Panjrapur is nearing completion, after which we will be in the position to supply an additional 50 MLD of water after adding 50 MLD after the Bhandup plant is restructured.”
