BMC to appoint management committees in civic schools

Struggling against corruption charges and lack of infrastructure in civic schools, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to launch School Management Committees (SMC) in civic schools by the end of July.

Struggling against corruption charges and lack of infrastructure in civic schools, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to launch School Management Committees (SMC) in civic schools by the end of July. Formation of SMCs has been made mandatory through the Right to Education act.

Each SMC will have representation from parents, teachers and activists from ALMs or NGOs in the area, and work like Parent-Teacher Associations do in private schools. It will also have the responsibility of looking over the quality and quantity of midday meals, distribution of stationery, general hygiene and the attendance of teachers.

“In a meeting with BMC officials, we were assured that SMCs will be formed from this academic year,” said Nitin Wadhwani, anchor for Mumbai-ites 4 Child Rights (M4CR).

Additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani said the SMCs will be formed by the end of July. “Parents of civic school students mostly come from uneducated backgrounds and can’t always voice their point. Activists in these committees will surely make some difference,” he said.
