With cases of octroi evasion on the rise, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to install number plate recognition CCTV cameras on all its octroi nakas, to track defaulters.

The tender for the CCTV cameras will be issued by next month. Installation of scanners and fencing of boundary walls will also be taken up as a part of the octroi modernisation project, in all five octroi nakas.

There have been instances where BMC employees were found to have helped companies evade octroi, so the installation of CCTV cameras will help stop such practices as well.
Octroi is the highest revenue earner of the BMC and contributes to one-fifth of the corporation’s total budget.
