In an effort to keep public spaces clean, the civic body has for the first time undertaken a study of high footfall areas - locations where people gather in large numbers - in the city to identify the gaps in the existing system.

The exercise is being carried out as part of the central government’s Swachh Bharat campaign.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 382 high footfall areas across the city to create a model zero-garbage area. It will attempt to understand the demands of each high footfall area and the plan touches upon improving all the components of waste management, from collection to disposal, in these areas.

The BMC is collecting data on basic facilities available in these areas including manpower employed, number of dustbins etc. These details are to be submitted on a weekly basis by each ward.

Based on the weekly reports, the civic body is preparing the list of infrastructural gaps in the system and the possible solutions.

A comparative report will finally identify gaps in the system and suggest solutions. “We will analyse the report submitted at the end of each week and submit the report detailing the requirement of the area,” said Milind Sawant, deputy municipal commissioner, assessment and collection.

While announcing the array of initiatives under a five-year master plan to keep the city clean, Vikas Kharge, additional municipal commissioner said, “We will develop the infrastructure of garbage management in these areas. We will analyse if more litter bins, manpower and other mechanised equipment are needed for garbage collection and provide the same.”
