FICCI Frames 2011 ended on Friday evening with FOX Star Studios’ two leading actors, one from Hollywood and one from Bollywood — Hugh Jackman and Shah Rukh Khan — engaging in a hilarious discourse about the business of entertainment and its future.
The event organiser presented an audio-visual of Jackman’s film scenes edited to Mithun Chakraborthy’s popular song, Disco Dancer. Jackman recounted a scene from his film that he claimed was inspired by Bollywood. “Nicole (Kidman) and I walk out of a dance and we have our first kiss, and suddenly it starts raining. So everyone runs out and starts dancing in the rain. My director told me it was inspired from what happens in Bollywood films.”
Khan along with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Yash Chopra and Karan Johar welcomed the Australian actor to the country and to Bollywood. Jackman who arrived in the city on Thursday afternoon will be travelling to Jaipur tomorrow with his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.
Apart from the growing collaborations between the two largest industries in the world, the artistes discussed the increasing presence of Hollywood studios in an industry that for very long has survived on independent producers and family businesses.
The event, which marked the end of the global convention, turned into what looked like an impromptu episode of Koffee With Karan as both the actors broke into a little gig. Jackman concluded the ceremony praising Khan’s work in My Name Is Khan, before saying, “I didn’t think the first time I’d come to India would only be for four days. But I hope to return soon.” Khan, in turn credited the Australian actor for inspiring his forthcoming superhero film RA.One. “I saw all the X Men films, and read all the comics,” he said.
