The Bombay high court on Friday rejected the bail application of a man allegedly responsible for the death of his wife and one-year-old son, in a case of dowry and harassment.

Justice Mridula Bhatkar was hearing the application filed by Santosh Gare, who claimed his wife had committed suicide, as her body was found in a lake.

The couple got married in March 2012, after which the woman started living with her husband’s family, who allegedly made repeated demands for gold and money. The husband allegedly abused her, till she lodged a complaint of cruelty against him in Nashik in August 2013 and started living with her parents. Gare then submitted an affidavit saying he would not torture her again, after which they started living together. They subsequently had a child.

On November 11, 2014, the bodies of the woman and her one-year-old son were found in a lake. The woman’s father filed an FIR against his son-in-law. Gare was arrested and has been in jail since.
