Bulk users tap BMC for recycled water

Some industrial units and clubs have now asked the civic body to supply recycled water for non-potable uses, as this is a cheaper option.

The Royal Western India Turf Club and Wellington Club have approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to provide 0.7 MLD and 1 mld of water respectively.

“Treating water before releasing it into the sea is our statutory duty. If that water is used for non-potable purposes, the city can get additional water of about 370 MLD,” said S.S. Palav, officer on special duty (technical), at the BMC.

The BMC will also supply 50 MLD to the Deonar landfill, now converted into a green zone.

The BMC spends about Rs 10 to recycle a litre of water and is negotiating with interested buyers. The BMC charges commercial users Rs 28 for a litre of fresh lake water.
