A motorcyclist was crushed to death after a BEST double decker bus overturned near Kalanagar in Bandra (East) on Friday evening.
The bus, on route no 310 that plies between Kurla and Bandra railway stations, was carrying at least 31 passengers. They were taken to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra (West), said the police. According to the Disaster Management Cell of the BMC, 10 persons were given first aid and allowed to go, 16 were admitted to Bhabha Hospital for minor injuries, while five were taken to other hospitals. Kherwadi police have arrested the driver of the bus, Jalinder Bhosle.
The incident took place around 5pm when the driver tried to take a left turn at the Kherwadi junction at high speed, according to police. “In the attempt, the bus lost balance and toppled to its left. A motorcyclist who was going parallel to the bus, was crushed under it,” said Avdut Chavan, senior inspector, Kherwadi police station. Major portions of a tree on the left side of the road also came crashing down.
The body of the motorcyclist, Harishkumar Ravindra Pillai, was found in a pool of blood at the spot.
He was rushed to Bhabha Hospital where he was declared dead. The bike was completely damaged. Pillai, 31, worked with a BPO in Andheri, and was due to get married on May 3. His uncle, KK Nambiar, said: “We got a phone call from the police around 7.30pm and rushed to the hospital. We haven’t informed Harish’s mother about the mishap. It would be impossible for her to come to terms with the news.”
Harish’s father Ravindran Pillai, 60, and brother Santosh Pillai, 26, were not in a position to speak. Nambiar said Harish always travelled by his bike. “Today, being a holiday, I think he went out for some wedding-related errand. The entire family was eagerly waiting for the marriage.” As soon as the bus fell, bystanders rushed in to help and pulled out the passengers through the emergency exit. Two hippo cranes were summoned to the spot to lift the bus. A fire brigade vehicle and three ambulances were also requisitioned.

{{/usCountry}}Traffic was obstructed for nearly an hour at the Kherwadi junction. The cranes managed to right the bus by around 5.45pm. “A case has been registered against the driver for causing death by negligence, and for endangering life of others under section 304(A) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 334 (voluntarily causing hurt), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering the safety of others) and 279 (rash and negligent driving) of the IPC,” said Chavan.
