'Can't believe my locality is now so unsafe'

The victim's grandfather cannot believe their locality has become so unsafe that leaving his granddaughter alone for ten minutes would lead to her kidnapping.

"It was hardly for ten minutes that my grand daughter was standing in the queue, as my wife had come home to keep the bucket of water," he said. He had been searching for the victim all night till she came home.

"My wife told me that the suspect, who was young, stood in the queue to fill water just behind them. He asked my wife where she resided and when she told him our address, he said he resided in the same neighbourhood as ours," the victim's grandfather added.

The victim's grandmother initially found it strange that she had never seen the suspect in the locality before, she said in her statement to the police. "They continued the conversation and when she had to go home to keep the bucket, she told the suspect to take care of her granddaughter as she would come in a few minutes," said a police officer from Shivaji Nagar police who recorded her statement.

The victim resides with her father - a driver by profession- mother, two younger sisters and her grand parents. She was studying at a local school.
