Can’t take cables seriously: CM

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said that his government would not take the revelations by WikiLeaks of US diplomatic cables seriously.

He, however, also noted that coalition politics in state could have slowed down development of the state. Since 1999, Maharashtra has governments formed by Congress-NCP coalition.

“This is an assessment made by foreign embassy officials often by junior level officials on the basis of their interactions. They are not hard gleaned facts or the truth, so how seriously should one take it?’’ said Chavan.

Chavan said that the cables could be disputed and in terms of industrial development and Foreign Direct Investment — two yardsticks to gauge the state’s performance Maharashtra continued to be in the top position.

He, however, admitted that there could have been a slowdown in the state’s progress when compared to other states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka.
