The over-confidence of a 22-year-old thief, who specialised in climbing tall buildings to gain entry into houses, landed him in deep trouble as he made another bid to break into a house on Tuesday. This time round, he fractured his right leg after jumping off the fourth floor of a building to avoid being caught, and was finally arrested.
The incident took place around 1.30am on Tuesday when Ganesh Barkade alias Ganya somehow managed to gain an entry into Ashok Salunkhe’s fourth floor flat at MHADA colony near Vashi Naka through the window.
The accused pocketed two mobile phones and a watch and was opening a cupboard when Salunkhe’s daughter woke up and started shouting for help, police said. Hearing the commotion, Salunke also woke up and he charged towards Barkade.
In a bid to escape, Barkade jumped off the building from the same window. The accused thought that he would latch onto something to reduce the impact of the fall but he couldn’t manage to do so and fell on the ground, seriously injuring self, said RCF police.
As soon as the accused collapsed on the spot with injuries on his legs, the residents of the building caught hold of him and handed him over to the RCF police that arrested him for theft. Barkade’s right leg has been fractured and he has sustained serious injuries on his other leg, police said. “The accused normally scans through a building and targets houses that do not have a grill as in this case,” said police inspector P Dharia of RCF police station.

{{/usCountry}}The accused resides in a hutment near the Vashi Naka area and has been arrested for break-ins in the past as well, police said. “Barkade has several cases of house break-ins registered against him. We managed to arrest him this time as he could not run. He was badly injured when he jumped off the building,” said a police officer.
