A two-member team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Mumbai, will be in New Delhi on Friday to meet the agency’s director, Ashwani Kumar, to discuss the controversial Adarsh society case.
Abhin Modak, superintendent of police of CBI’s anti-corruption branch (ACB), who is the main investigating officer in the Adarsh society scam, will head the team.
The team’s visit is being seen as an important step with the CBI preparing to register a first information report (FIR) in the case. The agency’s officers in Mumbai will need a clearance from their director to register the FIR.
The Mumbai CBI had submitted a status report on the probe to Kumar last week.
On Thursday, the CBI got some more documents from the Army and from Adarsh society. A senior CBI officer, requesting anonymity, said the agency is still waiting for the details of the sources of income of those who were allotted flats in the building.
The CBI had asked the society to give it details of income tax returns of all the members. The officer said the CBI’s present focus will be on the defence personnel allegedly involved in the irregularities. “That is because we have taken the case suo moto and state government officers do not fall under our purview,” the officer said. “But we can act against central government officials.”

{{/usCountry}}He added that to register case against all those involved, the Centre, the high court or the Supreme Court will have to hand over the case to the agency. Sources in the CBI said Kumar is likely to discuss the case in detail and prepare his Mumbai team for registering the FIR.
