CBSE students who took school exam can apply to junior colleges

The state government has decided to allow CBSE students, who did not take the board exam this year, to apply to state junior colleges once the online admission process is complete.

While they will be able to apply to junior colleges, the government is yet to decide whether it will be final. The decision is likely to be taken on Monday.

This is the first year that CBSE students had the option of giving the board exam or a school final exam. CBSE students, who took the board exam, can apply to junior colleges through the online admission process.

“Our stand has been clear from the beginning that a school exam is not equivalent to a board exam,” said V Radha, who is temporarily in charge as principal secretary of the school education department.

“But for the few students, who have changed their mind about applying to junior college or whose parents have been transferred, we have said we will declare the remaining seats after online admissions are over, open for them,” Radha added.

“Transfer cases will be on a better footing and we will identify and try and understand what we can do for them,” added Radha.

There will be five rounds of the online admissions process. Seats in most coveted colleges are unlikely to be available once the online process is completed.

”Children will lose out on the good colleges,” said Avnita Bir, principal of RN Podar School in Santacruz.

“Hopefully the department will further thaw on its stand,” Bir added.
