CCTV camera captures suspects

Police investigating Thursday’s armed robbery at Ghatkopar, which left a 60-year-old security guard and a police constable injured, have found a video footage of three accused suspected to be involved in the incident.

The police had earlier said that four persons were involved in the robbery at BB Jewellers, the store from where jewellery and cash worth Rs8 lakh was stolen on Thursday morning. They have now confirmed that only three persons were involved in the incident.

An investigating officer, talking on condition of anonymity said, “A week before targeting BB Jewellers, the accused had attempted to rob another jewellery store in the city. The three accused, however, could not break open the safe and fled the shop. The faces of the three accused have been clearly captured by the high quality CCTV camera installed at the shop.”

The CCTV camera at BB Jewellers could not capture the faces of the accused clearly, as the camera did not have night vision facility. The robbery took place at 4.15 am.

Three persons had entered BB Jewellers by breaking open the shutter. Rambhanudas Ravan, 60, the watchman of the building where the shop is located, tried to stop them. The accused attacked him with an iron rod following which he fell unconscious. He is recuperating at KEM hospital.

A constable, Vikas Rajapure, was fired at by the accused. The bullet missed Rajapure but he fractured his hand while protecting himself from being attacked by an iron rod.

“We have registered a case of attempt to murder and robbery against the three unidentified accused,” said MS Suryavanshi, senior police inspector of Pant Nagar police station.
