The Opposition demanded Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s resignation, alleging that norms were flouted in allotting land at Colaba to Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society in return for which houses were allotted to Chavan’s relatives, defence personnel, bureaucrats and politicians.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari on Friday welcomed a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in the matter. He said the agency should probe the matter properly thoroughly, implying that the agency at times played into the hands of the Congress.
“The CBI is the Congress’ coalition partner,” said Gadkari.
He added: “The land was supposed to be used for housing war heroes but Congressmen got their relatives in.”
The BJP president said his party would raise the issue in the Parliament’s Winter Session that begins on November 9. “We will demand that the guilty be punished,” he said.
Peasants and Workers Party general secretary Jayant Patil and Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi also demanded Chavan’s resignation. “He has misused his position, so he must go,” said Patil.
