Giving in to the demand of the family members as well as political parties, the investigation in the Prashant Lahane self-immolation case was transferred to the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday.
Lahane, 30, had committed suicide in front of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) on August 2 to protest against the alleged physical and mental harassment of his handicapped sister Sangeeta, a UMC employee, by senior officials.

Reacting to the move, Shivajirao Rathod, DCP, Ulhasnagar, said, “Sangeeta Lahane took time to record the statement. The investigation couldn’t have progressed without it.”
Meanwhile, Sangita Lahane registered a supplementary FIR in which she has named advocate Sunil Dhanwani, ex-chairman of UMC school board Kishore Vanvari, ex-corporator Asaram Dodke and Ramesh Gorad as the co-accused.
Lahane’s sister Sulakshana said, “Our family has been demanding a CID inquiry into the case from the beginning.”
Anticipatory bail applications of accused Shiv Sena leader Chandrakant Bodare and education officer Suresh Gaikwad will be heard on August 19.
