Citizens meet MPs, place their demands

Shedding their Sunday morning languor, more than 500 Mumbaiites decided to step out of their homes to meet their respective Members of Parliament (MPs). In the event organised by Action for Good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI) at Apostolic Carmel High School, Hill Road, Bandra, citizens raised their concerns before their representatives.

Out of the six MPs of Mumbai, Gopal Shetty (North constituency), Kirit Somaiya (North-East constituency), Gajanan Kirtikar (North-West constituency) failed to mark their presence. However, Poonam Mahajan (North-central constituency), Rahul Shewale (South-central constituency) and Arvind Sawant (Mumbai-South constituency) were present.

Citizens spoke to their MPs about issues like the empowerment of women, improvement in railways, environment and health.

Shyama Kulkarni, trustee, AGNI said, “We have a huge population that pays taxes and we want separate funding to come from the Central government for Mumbai. We have given a lot to the government and now we want something back. Do not treat us like stepchildren, we want our voices to be heard.”

“We want another railway line for commuters on the port lands. It is high time the government opens up the port land area for commuters. If they are planning to make Mumbai the Shanghai of India, then they should first focus on better connectivity,” said Disha Deshpande, a resident of South Mumbai.
