City doctors run to create awareness

On Sunday, city doctors will participate in the Mumbai marathon hoping to create awareness on rare ailments. Doctors and patients from Spina Bifida foundation will spread messages about Spina Bifida, a condition which paralyses over 50,000 newborns every year across the country.

"Marathon helps us connect with a large number of people and thus, makes it easier to alert them about this preventable disease," said Dr Santosh Karmarkar from the foundation.

Neuro-spinal surgeon Dr PS Ramani, 75, who will be running in the half marathon, encourages his patients to participate. "Post-surgeries, most patients tend to avoid exercise. I ask them to join me in morning jogs and eventually, they run the marathon," said Dr Ramani, who participated in the Amsterdam marathon to celebrate his 75th birthday.

Doctors from the Indian Liver Foundation (ILF) will be participating for the first time in the marathon. "Earlier, we use to run under the banner of kidney foundation. This year, we have decided to run for ILF, so that awareness is generated for liver diseases also. We receive a lot of inquiries during and after the marathon," said Dr Umesh Khanna, president of ILF.
