A 45-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly killing his 19-year-old daughter at Shivaji Nagar in Govandi after she refused to marry the man of his choice.

Mohammad Gafoor Shah, a hawker, tried to mislead the police by telling them that his daughter, Tabassum, died due to TB. Tabassum was having an affair with Imran Shaikh, 21, who belonged to another sub-caste, the police said.
“Mohammad was afraid that he would be boycotted if he allowed them to get married. He chose a boy for her from his native place in Uttar Pradesh,” said RS Agarwal, senior inspector, Shivaji Nagar police station. “On Saturday night, during an argument, Mohammad banged Tabassum’s head against the wall and the girl fell unconscious.”
The family took her to Raja-wadi hospital post-5.30am, where she was declared dead.
Mohammad did not tell the police about attacking her and the family was allowed to bury the body on Sunday evening.
“The post-mortem report revealed that Tabassum had been hit on the head, which resulted in her death,” said Agarwal.
