Civic body to set up two ALMs in slums in Chembur

Taking note of the positive response to its first slum advanced locality management (ALM) in Deonar, the civic body plans to set up slum ALMs in Cheetah Camp and Ghatla village in Chembur.

For the first time, the civic body also plans to give lessons in garbage segregation, cleanliness and sanitation to municipal school students from the areas. "As most children from civic schools in these areas live in nearby slums, we hope that they will share the benefits of cleanliness and garbage segregation with their parents," said Rajkumar Sharma, member, Advanced Locality Management and Networking Action Committee of Chembur, who is spearheading the project.

Seema Redkar, officer on special duty for ALMs, said, "Since ALMs are not revenue generating models, it is a bigger challenge to approach slum dwellers. However, by reaching out to schoolchildren at a very young age, we will be able to inculcate civic sense in them. The slum ALM model will be replicated in other parts of the city too."

Residents will have to shell out Rs 10 a month for the maintenance of their neighbourhood.
