Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Eknath Khadse on Friday alleged that chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, who takes pride in governing the state with utmost transparency, is in fact leading a team of corrupt ministers.
To buttress his claim, Khadse took the names of ministers like deputy CM Ajit Pawar who faces allegations in irrigation scam; Rajendra Darda, named in the coal scam; Gulabrao Deokar, arrested in a housing scam; Shivajirao Moghe, named in a cheating case; Rajendra Gavit, named in a grants scam; Sunil Tatkare, who faces allegations in the irrigation scam; Anil Deshmukh, who faces allegations in the PDS scam; and Chhagan Bhujbal, who faces allegations in the Maharashtra Sadan construction scam.
“The minister [Ajit Pawar], who quit in view of corruption charges, has returned to the cabinet and sits next to you. We expect great transparency from you [Chavan], but it now appears that none of the ministers follow your directions and code of conduct,” Khadse said, adding that very few ministers had furnished details of their assets to the CM this year.
Khadse was speaking during the debate on governor’s inaugural speech. While treasury benches were all praise for his address to the joint session, which is a statement of the government’s policies and achievements, almost all opposition members slammed the government for ignoring the deteriorating law and order situation, especially atrocities against Dalits, the drought situation, farmers’ issues, irregularities in toll collection, public health, and environment. Chavan is expected to reply on Monday.
