The question is whether Chavan’s fate will be decided before or after the November 2 All India Congress Committee session, which is followed by Diwali on November 5, and US President Barack Obama’s visit to Mumbai on November 6.

Chavan, who was in Delhi on Saturday after being summoned by the Congress high command, offered to resign from the chief minister’s post during his one-hour meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Union minister AK Antony, who is also in-charge of Maharashtra, and Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel also attended the meeting.

“I am here, my resignation is also here. I leave it to you to take a final view,” Chavan told the media that he told Gandhi. The tone and body language of the 51-year old chief minister had changed since his brave claim in Mumbai on Friday that he saw no reason to resign.
