College students support LGBT community

Group of college students form support group for LGBT community, spearhead campaign and initiatives for sensitisation.

Last week, a group of 80 people gathered in a hall in Bandra. For some of the attendees, it was a crucial moment as they attempted to reveal a detail, personal, but something they’d like others to know.

Initiated by a group of six TYBMM students from Wilson College, who are spearheading a campaign against stigmatisation of homosexuality, the discussion, titled PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Gays and Lesbians), saw individuals coming out of the closet and talking about their
sexual orientation with family and friends.

“A few individuals were accompanied by their parents. A major point of discussion was how it is more difficult to come of the closet to your family than to your friends,” says Alisha Sharma, who was joined by her classmates Tusha Mathews, Alisha Sequeira, Nikita Saha, Maliha Patel and Anu Singh in this cause, which they call Living Outside The Closet (LOTC).

From January 3 to 5, LOTC will hold a series of public activations at busy areas such as Churchgate station and Kala Ghoda.

The group has also tied up with NGOs Point Of View, Labia and Kranti for their ongoing events.

Living Outside The Closet will stage street plays at Churchgate station and Kala Ghoda, from January 3 to 5.
