The Mumbai traffic police have promised action within three days on all complaints against errant taxi and auto drivers. They have even created a special unit of four officers to redress such complaints. The unit will start work within a fortnight.

The process to take action currently requires 10 days, by which time the citizen has lost interest. Traffic police officers say taking action is a lengthy process as the department is short-staffed.
Now, to solve the staff-crunch problem, Chowgule said, they would “deploy additional and dedicated force to track down addresses of taxi and auto drivers. This will make it easier to punish them”.
Traffic police officers said commuters are refused by taxi or auto drivers could lodge a complaint at the nearest traffic chowkie or police station. The erring driver would be charged under the Maha-rashtra Motor Vehicle Ruling, 1989. The driving licence of a repeat-offender would be cancelled.
