Confusion over quota seats still prevails

Dantara, who scored 88% in her Secondary School Certificate exam, managed to secure a seat in the college despite the cut-off for the arts stream being four marks higher.

“I applied in the general category, but have been allotted a seat in the ex-servicemen category, which had a lower cut-off. Although I am happy that I got into Ruia, which was my first option on the admission form, I’m still worried if my admission is confirmed or not,” said Dantara, who secured a provisional admission at SIES College, Sion, which was her fourth preference at the end of the first list.

There is confusion among students as a handful of them have been wrongly allotted quota seats across colleges. But principals are saying that since the process is online such an error is unlikely.

Even at Jai Hind College Manish Monani, 16, got into the commerce stream, despite scoring a mark lesser than the cut-off of 499 out of 550. “I will go to college on Tuesday to check the details. I’m happy that my efforts paid off, but I’m still on tenterhooks,” said Monani, who scored 90.55% in his Class 10 exam.

But Jyothi Thakur, head of junior college, Jai Hind College, said, “The student must be mistaken. The student must belong to a quota. I will reconfirm it.”

Several high-scorers are still waiting to make it to their preferred colleges. “When the cut-off was 90.91% at the end of the first list, I was hoping to make the cut with my score of 90.18% on the second merit list,” said Akshay Ranade, 15, who hopes to secure a seat in the third list.
