Upset with yet another disappointment in the Vidhan Parishad polls, Congress senior leadership pointed a finger at ally, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), saying it was time to go solo for the 2014 elections.
At a party function held on Wednesday, state party president Manickrao Thakre said, “We have tried to move forward with the NCP. Congress will have to rethink such an alliance.’’
Thakre said this in his address to several local taluka and district level party cadres. Earlier, several local leaders had slammed NCP as well as factionalism as the main reasons for the party’s electoral losses.
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan hinted at internal party strife and rivalries being the root cause of the defeat. “Do we need to make some basic changes within our organisation? A discussion on this is scheduled soon and will be deliberated in Delhi.’’
In the Vidhan Parishad polls, Congress lost two out of the three seats it contested with NCP. NCP, however, won all the three seats it contested.
Former union minister Subodh Mohite said: “If Congress has to compete with other parties, then our local leaders need more powers to take local decisions. When we have two former chief ministers fighting publicly in media, then what can be our party image?’’
